It was complete synchronicity. Drag goddess Suppository Spelling hosted an amazing night of drag and hankies on the night of Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco, which just happened to coincide with the launch of the Hanky Code app on iTunes.

Truck (Sunday night) has become THE spot for the best, avant-garde drag in San Francisco. This isn’t drag where old guys dress up like ladies. The Truck queens are hot, hot, hot, young, sexy, lithe and incredibly talented not to mention totally out there. I will never forget the sight of one of the girls doing a back flip IN HIGH HEELS from the stage onto the floor in perfect time with the music.

Spaz kindly handed over the stage to Jonathan who gave an impromptu announcement about the Hanky Code app. Sadly the camera died right before he went on, but you can see photos from the glamorous, hanky bedecked evening.

It’s hard for most of us to imagine what it was like being gay in the early 70’s when getting caught with another dude could land you in jail and raids on bars were frequent. But now a growing group of young guys are getting a taste of Stonewall-era police brutality. The latest of 4 gay bar raids just took place in Atlanta.

A bunch of our friends were present for the raid. There was no criminal activity of any sort going on, no drugs were found, yet 60 men were bound and had to lay face down for more than an hour as they were illegally searched. Now try imagining that happening in a straight bar.

Here is Mike Alvear’s account on Huffington Post. Now what is even scarier is that this is the 4th in a series of raids across the country, one of which occurred right on the anniversary of Stonewall!

Something about Prop 8 has rattled the bones of the homophobic, and even though we didn’t win, it seems as though people are more afraid than ever about gay rights. All the more reason that we need to get out of our gay cyber closets and start wearing our stripes.

As Harvey Milk once said, the greatest form of activism is to be VISIBLE, to leave behind the closets so that our friends, coworkers, and neighbors have a chance to see that we’re just like everybody else (except of course more fab).

Many feel that this statement, 30 years later, no longer applies. In fact, in 2009 it has never been more applicable.

With the failure of the gay and lesbian movement to stop Prop 8, the increasing number of unwarranted raids on gay bars (4 this year), and diminishing funds for LGBT health clinics, the gay rights movement is in big trouble. And there is a cultural reason for it.

Craigslist, Manhunt, Xtube and on and on… the Internet has provided hundreds of avenues back into Closet 2.0 — the “cyber closet.”

The cyber closet offers gays and lesbians anonymous social interactions from the comfort, safety and convenience of their own homes without all that messy “being out” stuff.

And the gay movement has paid the consequence. We no longer need to wear our stripes like our gay forebears (pun intended) in order to find and connect with fellow gays. We can do all that in a dark room.. with our computers.

As a result we have once again become invisible. And as long as we remain invisible we will never truly gain our equal rights.

If you need proof you need look no further that Proposition 8, a first in American history when civil rights were actually taken away from a minority group.

Before there was the rainbow flag, the most prominent symbol of the gay movement, there was the Hanky Code, a gay code that allowed gays and lesbians to literally wear their stripes and find each other amidst a world of hostility and fear.

Our hope is that a new digital Hanky Code will help to revive this age-old gay tradition and help to bridge the gap between our ever expanding cyber double-life and the very real need to be Out (with a capital O) and to meet each other in the public sphere.

The Hanky Code is a celebration of gay history and a call to arms.. to be proud and maybe a little more extroverted about the great diversity of colors which make up the modern gay movement.

HankyCo, LLC is the official website of the Hanky Code, available on iTunes for the iPhone and iTouch.

Eventually we will have some cool merchandise and a way for people to submit their own hankies to be included in upcoming versions of the app.

Many people have asked about the dude on the Hanky Code site. He is Bill Cable a pretty famous porn star form the 70’s who died (we think) of AIDS. He basically sums up the natural, manly look of the 70’s when the Hanky Code was in its hey day. And besides.. just nice to look at.
